The Waxing Of Joy

The ecstatic dancing of Latin America has been transposed to the island nation of New Zealand (settled predominantly by citizens of the British Isles, whose population displaced the now minority indigenous Maori). As Barbara Ehrenreich famously suggested in “Dancing in the Streets”, collective joy embodied in dancing has been in decline in developed nations - replaced by staid spectacles and a disciplined workforce. The stunning musical composition, “Growth” by Icelander cellist Hildur Gudnadottir creates a sombre atmosphere that provides a foil to the dances, slowed to a crawl.
